Where mathematics takes you.
Sixteen careers, what they really pay, and a plan by stage, for students who love mathematics.
A maths degree is a licence, not a job title
Employers are not buying the theorems you memorised. They are buying the speed at which you will learn their problem. What the market rewards is mathematics plus one.
What a medal buys, and what it doesn’t.
Three doors it opens, and the honest limit.
- CMI
- Direct BS (Hons) via the IMO / EGMO camp
- ISI
- B.Math / B.Stat test waived for INMO awardees
- IIT Bombay
- BS Mathematics outside JEE
- IIT Kanpur
- Olympiad route for 14 students in 2026–27
- IIT Madras
- ScOpE supernumerary seats
- IIT Kharagpur
- SCOPE from 2026–27
IMO participants never earn a maths PhD. A medal is a signal with an expiry date: it opens the first interview, and by your second job nobody asks. The medal is the receipt. The training is the purchase.
Sixteen careers.
Pick a path to see what the job is, what it pays, the catch, and what to start this year.
What it pays.
Base pay only. It excludes the bonus and equity that matter enormously in finance and technology.
- Quant offers at top campuses
- ₹80–90 L+
- Data scientist (fresher)
- ₹6–9 LPA
- Actuary (early papers)
- ₹4–8 LPA
- Indian Statistical Service
- ₹56,100 / month
- PhD stipend (NBHM / CSIR)
- ₹37–42k / month
Quant, AI and trading pay is bonus-heavy and concentrated in a handful of firms and campuses. Verify current figures at the official source.
Where to start.
Not a script, but a sequence that keeps the most doors open for the longest.
Every career starts at zero.
Chapter Zero is Liminal’s introductory online test, built to show how you think. No preparation needed.
